Torres Small signals support for Gov’s $35 million socialist free college plan

On Wednesday, Democrat Rep. Xochitl Torres Small (NM-2) tweeted to her followers what seemed to be an endorsement of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s socialist free college plan. The plan would award “free” tuition throughout all four years of college, regardless of family income.

According to the New York Times, Gov. Lujan Grisham’s proposal would “promis[e] four years of tuition even to students whose families can afford to pay the sticker price. ” Also, it would allow anyone, despite their age, to go to college for free, making it the most left-wing proposal in the country, going farther than New York’s law.

This is what Xochitl Torres Small wrote to her supporters:

The Lujan Grisham free college proposal will cost an estimated $25 -$35 million each year. That will be more money the state will have to look for in our budget, which is currently bolstered by oil and gas revenues.

Once the Governor’s “Green New Steal” legislation starts closing wells and driving energy producers out of the state, it’s unknown where the needed revenues for this program will come from.

  1. “The Lujan Grisham free college proposal will cost an estimated $25 -$35 million each year. That will be more money the state will have to look for in our budget, which is currently bolstered by oil and gas revenues. ”

I simply do not believe even a majority of Democrats in the NM Legislature will support this concept. It’s insanity!

  2. Once the state starts cutting oil revenues thru it’s green deals it will fall on the taxpayers. Why should my taxes be raised to pay for kids college when I’m retired and my children are grown. If I was going to help with college expenses, I would pay for a family member. I could see a compromise of low cost tuition for low income children, but for those that can afford it, no. What about trade schools? That’s what really needs promoting.

  3. Dottie’s suggestions definitely merit consideration. Like her, I am retired, my children are grown, and I have no desire to have my taxes raised to provide free tuition for ANYONE! We helped our own children obtain their college education without other taxpayers’ assistance and that’s the way it should be.

  4. Our governor is a idiot. She in one conference slapped every person who paid for college otis now paying for their education. A
And again like the Democrats before her spend every dime we can. No mention about what the lottery is paying for ( was supposed to help pay for college)or our roads or even help the New Mexico teachers get a livable wage. She is a idiot.
