CLEVELAND – Today is the day we all have been waiting for in Cleveland. Tonight, Donald J. Trump will formally accept the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Stakes are high today, with security increasing and the big question of what is to come. According to the New York Times, “as Mr. Trump prepares to take the stage, groups of demonstrators are expected to descend on Cleveland in a final show of opposition.” Last night, rebellion from Ted Cruz, still holding a grudge about the primary, left a bad taste in the mouths of Republicans nation-wide. Cruz was booed off the stage, and numerous Facebook posts and blogs have been chattering about the demise of his career. In this day and age, we cannot listen to the Facebook chatter, because they also predicted that Trump wouldn’t make it past the primary.
As security vamps, there are huge, or should I say “yuge” speeches scheduled for this evening including the chairman of the RNC, Reince Priebus and Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump. As we remember back in June of last year, Ivanka was who introduced her father as he descended from the escalator of the Trump Tower, so it is only fitting that she speak at the last day of the Republican convention as her father accepts the nomination.
The “code pink” protesters have been the only protesters who have gotten through the wall of the convention, so it is not expected that there should be much to worry about regarding security. The repellent use of the wall at the convention can also be used as proof that the wall is working already, and maybe it substantiates Trump’s theory of a wall on the Mexico border. There is also a march planned against “Islamophobia” at the square.
Perhaps the biggest question posed for this evening is whether the Donald will be his usual self or step into the role of President and tone down the rhetoric. Trump has made an appearance at each of the days of the Cleveland convention, something unseen in a presidential nominee. Although Trump has spoken at the convention to introduce his wife in person, and by video from the Trump tower, the content of the speeches have been relatively mild. A theory here at Join the Block Party is that Trump will take after his good friend, Rudy Giuliani and fire up the crowd, in preparation for a long battle against Hillary Clinton and her closet, chock-full of skeletons. We will just have to wait and see.
